Information

Radroute Via Romana The former Roman road is one of the most attractive routes for cycle tours along the Niederrhein. It covers a total distance of some 250 kilometres and is well-signposted. In the course of several days the Via Romana takes cycling enthusiasts to a variety of beautiful places, connecting the towns of Xanten, Marienbaum, Kalkar, Kleve and Kranenburg right up to Goesbeek and Nijmegen across the border into the Netherlands.

This is the most historic of the Niederrhein cycle routes and it is also a great opportunity to experience the region’s many different facets, which can be done even better by bike. Especially the sections along the rivers Maas and Rhine will put big smiles on cycle tour lovers’ faces, as the Via Romana passes many of the sights of the Niederrhein region as well as interesting museums, beautiful parks and impressive churches.

Apart from stops to admire the idyllic scenery and the many picturesque towns you should definitely plan a break in Xanten. Here you find attractive shops and squares, but above all the town’s medieval past is still very much in evidence. The famous Archaeological Park boasts Roman sites which have been reconstructed in authentic style, the historic city wall can be admired and, of course, Xanten Cathedral. Visit the Nord- und Südsee waterpark for fun and recreation, especially during summer.

Other examples of attractive sights along the Via Romana are the Nikolai Church and the old town hall in Kalkar as well as the internationally renowned Moyland Castle which apart from its famous art collections (works by Beuys are among those on exhibit) is simply an impressive sight to behold. From there it’s not far to go to Wunderland Kalkar, an amusement park located directly on the Via Romana. Enjoy the scenery, the culture and the history of the Niederrhein on this unique cycle tour. The many restaurants and pubs offer great opportunities to savour local specialities and meet people. Hint: If you are short of time it is a good idea to choose sections of the Via Romana for exploring the Niederrhein area by bicycle.
